Quickie 2.54mm IDC Headers: Amphenol's Workhorse Ribbon-Cable Interconnect

Amphenol's Quickie series is a 2.54 mm (0.100") pitch insulation-displacement connector header family designed to mate with flat ribbon cable sockets. The IDC termination punches through the cable jacket and bites into the conductor in a single press operation — no stripping, no crimping, no soldering. For production volumes where you are running dozens or hundreds of board-to-cable links through harness assembly, the labour savings alone often justify the BOM choice.

The series covers 6 to 64 positions in single- and dual-row layouts, with through-hole and surface-mount tail options. Contact material is phosphor bronze with selective gold over nickel in the mating area and tin on the solder tail. The housing is a glass-filled thermoplastic rated UL 94V-0, so it survives reflow and wave soldering without deforming.

Choosing a Variant

Start from the cable: if you are using 26 AWG stranded ribbon, the contact geometry is optimised for that gauge — switching to 28 AWG solid-core on the same header risks a cold IDC bite and intermittent opens after thermal cycling. Next, pin count: do not spec a 64-position header if only 48 conductors are active. Unused positions are just BOM cost and board real estate; Amphenol stocks enough intermediate counts that you rarely need to round up.

Through-hole versus SMT is not just a manufacturing decision. Through-hole tails add parasitic inductance (~3–5 nH per pin) that matters above roughly 50 MHz. For high-speed parallel buses, the SMT version with shortened stub length is the better choice even if your line runs wave solder for the rest of the board.
