0.5 mm Pitch Vertical SMT Non-ZIF — Board Fit and Insertion
Molex 78119-1119 is a 0.5 mm pitch vertical SMT FPC connector with a non-ZIF (non-zero insertion force) actuation mechanism. Vertical orientation places the FPC perpendicular to the PCB, which saves board-edge real estate but requires clearance above the connector for the ribbon bend radius. Non-ZIF means the FPC is inserted directly into the contact beams without a separate actuator lock — the contact spring force holds the ribbon in place. This design is simpler and lower-profile than a ZIF latch, but the insertion force is higher; the contact beams wipe the FPC pads on insertion, which can wear thin gold plating after repeated cycles. For a one-time factory install, non-ZIF is fine; for field-service reconnects, a ZIF variant may be preferable.
Lifecycle and Sourcing — Active Production
ROHS3 compliant per the manufacturer listing — the part meets the current EU restriction on hazardous substances, which is a standard BOM requirement for most electronics assemblies.
Packaging and Handling — Box Format
Supplied in Box packaging — loose pieces in a carton, not tape-and-reel. This suits prototype builds, low-volume production, or manual assembly lines. For automated pick-and-place, verify the feeder compatibility or request reel packaging if available.
