Start with your receptacle. The connector series you are mating to — Molex Easy-On, SlimStack, PanelMate, or a competitor's ZIF socket — dictates the pitch you need and whether you require stiffeners. Do not guess the stiffener spec; pull it from the receptacle datasheet.
Match conductor count to your bus width. If you are carrying a 40-pin LVDS interface plus ground returns, pay attention to signal-to-ground ratio and whether the adjacent-conductor coupling at your selected pitch is acceptable. At 0.3 mm pitch, crosstalk between adjacent conductors is non-trivial above roughly 50 MHz — run your own signal-integrity check rather than relying on the cable alone.
Pick contact orientation based on layout. Same-side contacts mean the cable folds flat between two boards mounted on the same plane. Opposite-side contacts let you cross from the top of one board to the bottom of another without twisting the cable — cleaner routing and less mechanical stress.
Plating is a reliability vs. cost tradeoff, not a checkbox. Tin is fine in dry indoor environments with at least 10 mating cycles minimum. Gold flash buys you low contact resistance in humid or condensing environments. Full 0.38 µm gold is worth it if the connection stays mated for years and you cannot afford contact oxidation — think automotive under-dash or outdoor kiosk enclosures.
