Industrial PCB Terminal Block Supply in Q3 2026: How the FR-4 Shortage Spread and CCL Cost Surge Are Reshaping WAGO 221, Phoenix Contact PT, Würth WR-TBL, and Weidmüller Lead Times for Panel Builders
A panel builder's first Monday of August
The cabinet is on the bench, the wire list is signed, and the controller's IO is mapped. Then the planner opens the BOM and three rows are amber: a 5.00 mm Phoenix Contact PT 2.5 four-position push-in feed-through, a WAGO 221-413 splicing lever-nut, and a stack of Würth 4087B 45-degree headers. Each one was a stock item two years ago. As of August 2026, the first two are 14-18 weeks through the franchised channel in some regions, the Würth header is two- to three-quarter dependent on the lot, and the stock room wants a substitution request before signing the build. The push to FR-4-grade PCB has compounded the back-pressure that started when CCL lead times crossed six months in late winter, and most panel builders have stopped assuming that a row in a 24-week distributor catalog means 24 weeks to dock.
This article is written for the buyer who lives in that Monday. It documents what is happening on the connector side of the FR-4 / CCL / ABF / glass-cloth cascade, what our independent catalog already covers across WAGO 221, Phoenix Contact CLIPLINE PT, Würth WR-TBL, and Weidmüller W-series, and how to put together an RFQ that does not lose weeks to back-and-forth.
What the supply chain looks like at the time of writing
Three independent threads converged into the panel-builder pain point.
First, the substrate raw-material side. Copper-clad laminate lead times crossed six months and a formal quota system was reported in March 2026, with Ajinomoto raising ABF film prices 30% in May 2026 under the headline "AI chip packaging upgrade." ABF film is not what a panel builder buys directly, but it sets the tone for how seriously CCL suppliers treat the next allocation cycle. Kingboard Laminates announced a second 2026 price increase of up to 15% in early July 2026, with the financial press explicitly noting that the AI-driven PCB material rally may extend into 2027.
Second, the FR-4 spread. The relevant 2026 milestone is the Evertiq report dated 19 August 2026, headlined "PCB material shortage spreads to standard FR-4 as structural shift deepens." For years FR-4 was the easy side of the PCB market — high-yield, multi-sourced, never quoted past a few weeks. The August 19 note is the first time a tier-one electronics industry outlet has treated standard FR-4 as part of the constraint chain rather than the safe side of it. The Business Standard coverage on 2 August 2026, headlined "AI boom, West Asia crisis drive PCB shortage, raise electronics costs," runs in the same direction. Electronics For You Business, on 13 August 2026, summarized the picture as "PCB shortage due to high demand amid supply disruptions."
Third, the regional Europe picture. Evertiq on 13 July 2026 ran "Europe's PCB comeback is colliding with a supply chain that isn't ready," which is relevant for European panel builders sourcing Würth Elektronik, Phoenix Contact, and Weidmüller. The openPR news desk on 23 July 2026 published a "Din Rail Terminal Blocks Market Set for Rapid Growth, Demand" note, signalling that demand for the finished DIN-rail assembly is rising while the upstream PCB and connector inputs are tightening.
Independent distributor implications. When CCL hits six months and FR-4 goes to allocation, the PCB shops that assemble the backplane, the controller, and the marshalling card lengthen too. That, in turn, lifts the pressure on every through-hole and push-in terminal block that the PCB shop feeds the panel shop. Independent distributors see the back end of the wave first, because the franchised allocation books the multi-year contract customer before the open stock counter. That is the slot in which our catalog earns its keep.
Where the catalog actually lands you
Our connector catalog spans the four families that show up in nearly every industrial panel BOM, plus the power-tap corner for the higher-current bus. Spec numbers below come from our cms-agent database and are quoted against the current datasheet where applicable. Buyers should always re-check the live datasheet before releasing a build.
WAGO 221 LEVER-NUTS splicing family
WAGO 221-413/VE00-2500 is a 3-wire-entry splicing connector in the LEVER-NUTS family, fully insulated, push-in spring termination, releasable, transparent-orange housing, 12-24 AWG, active lifecycle, bulk packaging. The 221 series is the splice-of-record for most control-cabinet wiring diagrams because it cuts install time versus traditional wire nuts, and the lever can be re-opened for re-work without replacing the connector. Across our WAGO Corporation brand we carry 1,459 SKU, most of them 221-series derivatives covering 2-, 3-, and 5-wire entries, color-coded variants, and bulk pack quantities.
Phoenix Contact CLIPLINE PT push-in spring family
Phoenix Contact 3209510 is a PT 2.5/4P feed-through in CLIPLINE PT, push-in spring termination, 5.2 mm terminal width, 24 A IEC (800 V) and 20 A UL (600 V), 12-26 AWG / 0.14-4 mm², UL94 V-0 polyamide insulation, active lifecycle. The matching 3209536 is the green/yellow ground-earth version with the same 5.2 mm pitch and 0.14-4 mm² wire range, and 3209565 is the 3-position ground block used in denser grounding bars. For finer wire gauges, Phoenix Contact 3208100 sits in PT 1.5/S — 3.5 mm width, 17.5 A IEC / 15 A UL, 500 V IEC / 300 V UL, 14-26 AWG / 0.14-1.5 mm², also push-in spring and UL94 V-0. The CLIPLINE PT family is the push-in backbone for cabinet marshalling: the same Phoenix Contact accessories bridge to screw and spring-cage terminals, so the panel builder can mix terminations on one DIN rail without changing the jumper system.
Phoenix Contact COMBICON MKDS and MKDSN screw families
For builds where the panel spec still calls for rising-cage screw termination, Phoenix Contact 1715022 (COMBICON MKDS, 5.00 mm pitch, 15 A / 300 V, 14-30 AWG, M3, 0.5-0.6 Nm torque, horizontal with board, interlocking side feature) and 1729144 (COMBICON MKDSN, 5.08 mm pitch, 10 A / 300 V, 14-30 AWG, M3, 0.5-0.6 Nm torque, horizontal with board) cover the through-hole backplane side. We carry 2,748 Phoenix Contact SKU, with PT 4 at 962, PT 6 at 686, PT 10 at 888, and PT 16 at 518 — most of the populated Phoenix Contact DIN-rail footprint.
Würth Elektronik WR-TBL and REDCUBE families
Würth Elektronik 691408720005B is the WR-TBL Series 4087B, 5.00 mm pitch, 15 A / 300 V, 12-28 AWG, through-hole, screwless leg-spring / push-in spring termination, 45-degree (135-degree) angle with board, one level, five positions, PA66 / Nylon 6/6 housing with stainless-steel clamp and tin-plated brass contacts, operating temperature -40°C to +105°C, active lifecycle. The 45-degree angle is the form factor used in edge-of-board wiring for marshalling cards where space behind the card is tight. Würth REDCUBE WP-SMRA — represented in our catalog by 7466313R — is the high-current terminal family, screw-mount power tap, M3 thread, solder termination, surface-mount right-angle, 50 A current rating, brass contact with tin finish, active lifecycle. REDCUBE WP-BUFU 7461097 sits at the high-current end with M6 thread and press-fit termination for backplane bus bars. Across the Würth Elektronik catalog we list 2,390 SKU.
Weidmüller W-series screw family
Weidmüller 1020300000 is the W-series feed-through screw terminal at the high-current end: 65 A UL / 57 A IEC, 600 V UL / 1000 V IEC, 9.9 mm terminal width, 6-16 AWG / 1.5-16 mm², 12 mm stripping length, thermoplastic Wemid insulation, UL94 V-0. Weidmüller 1010100000 is the matching W-series ground-earth block at 10-22 AWG / 0.5-6 mm², UL94 V-0. The Weidmüller catalog totals 1,386 SKU, which covers both DIN-rail marshalling and the Klippon PCB terminal block lines.
Cross-reference logic
The four families overlap heavily in panel applications. Three structural differences drive the choice:
-
Termination style. Push-in spring (PT 2.5, PT 1.5, WR-TBL 4087B leg-spring, WAGO 221 lever) cuts install time and is the preference for builds where labor is the bottleneck. Screw (COMBICON MKDS, MKDSN, Weidmüller W, REDCUBE WP-SMRA) survives field-service abuse and is the preference for cabinets that get reworked or that handle high vibration. A panel can mix both as long as the accessories line up — CLIPLINE PT jumpers do not reach across to MKDS, and the Weidmüller W-series jumper is Weidmüller-specific.
-
Pitch and current. 3.5 mm (PT 1.5) for signal marshalling, 5.0 mm and 5.08 mm (PT 2.5, MKDS, MKDSN, WR-TBL 4087B) for control wiring, 6.0 mm and above (Weidmüller W higher-current, REDCUBE WP-SMRA) for power. A 4-position PT 2.5 at 24 A IEC is not a drop-in for a WDU at 65 A — check IEC current and wire range together.
-
Approvals and insulation. UL94 V-0 polyamide is the table-stakes call for most industrial control cabinets, and all four families meet it. Wemid (Weidmüller W) and PA66 / Nylon 6/6 (Würth 4087B) are higher-temperature thermoplastic options; Wemid is rated for continuous service above the typical PA66 ceiling.
The substitution path that we see working for buyers running tight is: drop down a pitch (5.00 mm to 3.50 mm) only if the wire range covers the actual cable — many 12 AWG control wires will not fit a 3.5 mm PT 1.5 block, so the substitution has to step up to PT 4 instead. Move termination style only if the panel builder's tooling covers both lever and ferrule-crimping. Avoid swapping brands mid-DIN-rail — the end-stop and jumper accessories do not match across families, and you end up with a hybrid that does not lable cleanly.
Procurement playbook under PCB CCL pressure
A clean RFQ under the current supply environment is short, specific, and explicit about which lines you will accept substitutes on.
MOQ and pack. State the MOQ tolerance up front. Most panel builders can accept 25-50 piece trays as MOQ for PT 2.5 and WR-TBL 4087B; for WAGO 221 splicing, full-case pack (often 100 piece boxes per part number) is the de-facto floor. Indicate whether tape-and-reel or cut-tape is acceptable for SMT variants — REDCUBE WP-SMRA ships in both forms and the cut-tape surcharge is real.
Per-line ship-from and ship-from week. Ask for ship-from week per line, not a single blanket ship-from. A WAGO 221-413 line and a Phoenix Contact 3209510 line will not share a ship-from in our catalog — they live in different warehouses with different stocking days.
Cross-reference acceptance. If you can accept a Würth WR-TBL in place of a Phoenix Contact MKDS at the same pitch, say so explicitly with the spec envelope (current IEC, voltage IEC, wire range, termination style). This is the line that turns a 48-hour quote into a 4-day quote during CCL crunch.
Datasheet verification. For push-in spring blocks, the actual wire-insertion force and the ferrule-vs-solid-wire behavior differ across PT 1.5 / PT 2.5 / WR-TBL 4087B. The substitution must be validated against the live datasheet, not the family brochure. Polyamide vs Wemid insulation, stripping length, and torque on the screw variants are the three fields most often missed.
Independent distributor scope. IC Source Direct is an independent connector and interconnect distributor. We are not an authorized channel for WAGO, Phoenix Contact, Würth Elektronik, or Weidmüller, and we do not offer manufacturer warranty. Our edge is multi-brand BOM consolidation, mid-MOQ access to long-tail catalog, and best-effort cross-reference when a franchised line is on allocation. The wrong fit is a brand-new, safety-critical, high-volume production line that has to track a single authorized channel — for that, go direct.
RFQ routing. Send the BOM as a single CSV with MPN, brand, required quantity, target ship-from, and the substitution envelope. We respond inside 24 business hours with a per-line ship-from week and an indication of which lines we can back with stock and which we have to source on RFQ. PO accept and ship follow per the per-line schedule.
Specific 2026 patterns we are seeing in Q3
Push-in spring blocks are under more pressure than screw blocks. The Phoenix Contact CLIPLINE PT 2.5 push-in feed-through is the family that most panel builders want to standardize on, and that family is showing the longest quote times in our quoting tool. MKDS and MKDSN screw blocks, by contrast, are quoting more cleanly — the screw-termination portfolio is wider and the install base is broader.
Lever splicing (WAGO 221) is short-stocked in 3-wire-entry variants and easier to find in 2-wire entries. The 221-413 and 221-415 color-coded variants run hot. If the panel diagram will accept a 5-wire entry (221-415/221-415 or 221-615), it is worth the substitution.
REDCUBE WP-SMRA is the family that AI-server power conversion is draining. The 7466313R and similar M3 SMT right-angle variants are following the 50 A power-tap demand from AI server PSUs and liquid-cooled backplanes. If the build is industrial-control rather than AI-server, independent inventory is more available. If the build is AI-server, expect the substitution conversation to start.
Weidmüller W at higher currents (1020300000, 65 A UL) is a quieter line that we are seeing quoted against rather than the Phoenix Contact PT 16. Buyers who can accept either have a clean substitution path.
What a clean substitution envelope looks like
For a 5.00 mm pitch feed-through at 24 A IEC, the buyer envelope is:
- Termination: push-in spring or screw (specify which is preferred and which is acceptable)
- Pitch: 5.00 mm or 5.08 mm (the 0.08 mm difference is often invisible to a panel layout)
- Current IEC: 24 A minimum
- Voltage IEC: 800 V minimum for industrial control, 500 V minimum for building automation
- Wire range: 0.14-4 mm² / 12-26 AWG
- Insulation: UL94 V-0, polyamide or equivalent thermoplastic
- Stripping length: 8-10 mm
- Approvals: UL, CSA, IECEE CB scheme
Anything outside that envelope should be flagged separately, not folded into the same substitution.
Closing the loop
The honest assessment for August 2026 is that the terminal-block supply environment is now downstream of the same CCL, FR-4, and ABF storm that the high-end PCB market has been quoting against since spring. Panel builders who do not change their RFQ habit will keep getting late-and-partial replies; panel builders who specify pitch, current IEC, voltage IEC, wire range, termination style, and the substitution envelope up front will get a clean per-line ship-from and a credible BOM. Our independent catalog covers the four families above with 1,386-2,748 SKU each and ships from independent stocking desks in Asia with a 24-hour RFQ response and consolidated packing lists.
Send the BOM, mark the lines where substitution is acceptable, and the same Monday-morning amber set can be green by Wednesday.
