TE Connectivity VAL-U-LOK 4.20 mm Wire-to-Board Power Connectors in Q3 2026: How the AI Server PSU Build-Out, Astrodyne TDI Acquisition, and HVAC Heat-Pump Electrification Are Reshaping the TE House Alternative to Molex Mini-Fit

TE Connectivity's record Q3 FY26 sales of $5.16B, the $1.4B Astrodyne TDI acquisition, and AI server PSU lead times stretching to 270 days are reshaping the 4.20 mm wire-to-board power connector family that buyers actively cross-reference against Molex Mini-Fit. Here is how independent-channel buyers can source the TE VAL-U-LOK 600V / 13A family against the long-tail Active and Obsolete split in August 2026.

Why this part matters in late August 2026

A contract manufacturer in Guangdong sent us a quote request on 14 August 2026 for two hundred pieces of a 6-position, dual-row TE Connectivity VAL-U-LOK header with locking ramp and board lock, in a through-hole solder form factor. The customer behind him is an AI server power-supply OEM in the Pearl River Delta that is building a 5,500 W 80 Plus Titanium reference design for hyperscale tier-two deployments. The designer chose the TE part over the Molex Mini-Fit equivalent because the TE board-lock footprint fits his existing PCB layout and the franchised distributor in Shenzhen quoted 18 weeks against a 4-week ship window. The independent channel found a clean tray of 250 pieces with a 2025 date code in two days. That single RFQ is the spine of this article: a 4.20 mm pitch, 13 A per circuit, 600 V rated wire-to-board power connector family that sits next door to Molex Mini-Fit, sits next door to Molex Ultra-Fit, and is now on the demand pull of three different end markets that did not all exist in their current form twelve months ago.

Three dated 2026 signals that move the 4.20 mm wire-to-board power market

TE Connectivity Q3 FY2026 record quarter and the Astrodyne TDI acquisition

TE Connectivity reported on 22 July 2026 that fiscal Q3 FY2026 sales reached a record $5.16 billion with adjusted EPS up 22% year over year, beating the high end of guidance (scanx.trade, 22 July 2026). On the same day, Reuters reported that TE announced the acquisition of Astrodyne TDI, a power-supply and EMI filter specialist, for $1.4 billion in cash (Reuters, 22 July 2026). The Astrodyne deal is the strategic part of the story for buyers in this article: TE is consolidating power-supply content upstream of the connector, which means the 4.20 mm wire-to-board power connector at the PSU output stage is now inside a TE-managed supply chain on both sides of the termination. The buying implication is that demand for VAL-U-LOK in 600 V / 13 A form is supported by a corporate roadmap, not by a generic distributor stocking cycle.

AI server demand tightening power-device supply

DigiTimes reported on 7 July 2026 that AI server build-outs have tightened power-device supply across the bill of materials, with lead times on key power discrete components stretching to as long as 270 days (DigiTimes, 7 July 2026). The TE Connectivity VAL-U-LOK family sits two steps downstream of the power devices in a 5,000 W to 6,000 W server PSU — between the secondary-side rectification and the backplane / bus-bar interface. When power-device lead times stretch, PSU OEMs hold more safety stock on the connector side and place multi-quarter releases, which is exactly the situation where the independent channel's long-tail inventory becomes valuable rather than redundant. ACES Electronics disclosed on 11 August 2026 that it is expanding high-speed wire harness capacity eightfold and that AI high-power order visibility now extends into 2028 (finance.biggo.com, 11 August 2026). A wire harness of that density at the PSU-output stage terminates in the same 4.20 mm pitch / 13 A connector family that this article covers.

Molex MiniMix for humanoid robotics and the competitive demand pull

Molex announced on 5 August 2026 its MiniMix Hybrid Power and Signal Connectors aimed at accelerating humanoid robotics mass-production scaling (PR Newswire, 5 August 2026). Two days earlier, the Wall Street framing in The Globe and Mail's 8 August 2026 piece on a "multitrillion-dollar humanoid robot market" explicitly cited TE Connectivity and Molex as the two industrial stocks that "sell the parts" for that build (Globe and Mail, 8 August 2026). The humanoid market is not the demand driver for a 600 V / 13 A / 105°C wire-to-board power connector on its own — most humanoid joint harnesses run at 48 V and use the MiniMix or Ultra-Fit family at lower current — but it pulls the same Molex production lines that serve Mini-Fit, which means Mini-Fit allocations on the 4.20 mm pitch space are tighter than the public order book suggests. The TE Connectivity VAL-U-LOK family is the natural cross-reference for buyers who cannot get Molex Mini-Fit on the 4.20 mm pitch, because both families are dual-row, 4.20 mm pitch, mid-current power, single-row-mateable housings with locking ramp and board lock variants.

The three signals are not the same industry. They are server-PSU, white-goods and HVAC-electrification, and humanoid-robotics adjacent. They share a connector base because the 4.20 mm pitch / 13 A per circuit envelope is the industry-standard mid-current power interface on a discrete-wire harness, and both TE Connectivity and Molex have built their families on that exact geometry.

What VAL-U-LOK actually is, by catalog evidence

The VAL-U-LOK family is TE Connectivity's discrete-wire, wire-to-board and wire-to-wire power connector family on a 0.165" (4.20 mm) pitch. The catalog evidence on icsourcedirect.com at the time of writing breaks down across three sub-families.

Receptacle housings. The 794954-6 is a representative example: a 6-position receptacle housing, 4.20 mm pitch on both rows, free-hanging (in-line) mounting, latch-lock fastening, Polyamide (PA) Nylon insulation, -40°C to +105°C operating temperature (TE Connectivity catalog, 794954-6, Active). The "Contacts Not Included" note is standard — the receptacle is sold without crimp contacts and the contacts are ordered separately against the wire gauge.

Vertical through-board headers, Glow-Wire Compliant. The 2825274-6 is a 6-position, vertical, through-hole header with board lock and Glow Wire Compliant construction, 4.20 mm pitch on both rows, 13 A per circuit, 600 V rated, -40°C to +105°C, UL94 V-0 Polyamide (PA) Nylon insulation, tin post and tin mating finish (TE Connectivity catalog, 2825274-6, Active). The 2825274-2 is the 2-position member of the same form factor. The Glow Wire Compliant construction matters for buyers running IEC 60335-1 household appliance builds, where the Glow Wire Ignition Temperature (GWIT) test at 775°C applies to unattended appliances — and a Glow Wire Compliant header removes one gate on the appliance-control PSU design.

Standard vertical headers. The 2825272-2 is a 2-position, vertical, through-hole header, Glow Wire Compliant, 4.20 mm pitch, 13 A per circuit, 600 V, UL94 V-2 Polyamide (PA) Nylon insulation (TE Connectivity catalog, 2825272-2, Active). The V-2 vs V-0 distinction is a material-spec difference buyers should know: V-0 self-extinguishes within 10 seconds on a vertical burn test, V-2 within 30 seconds. For industrial control panels and most server PSUs, V-0 is the agency requirement; V-2 is acceptable for non-safety-critical sub-assemblies and is the lower-cost variant.

Crimp contacts. The 794955-4 is a stamped pin contact, 18-22 AWG, gold-plated with 30 µin (0.76 µm) finish thickness, crimp termination, Tape and Reel (TR) packaging (TE Connectivity catalog, 794955-4, Active). The 794958-4 is the matching socket, 22-26 AWG, gold-plated, 30 µin finish, crimp termination (TE Connectivity catalog, 794958-4, Active). The 794958-3 is the tin-plated socket equivalent (TE Connectivity catalog, 794958-3, Active). The 794956-1 is the 18-22 AWG stamped socket in tin finish (TE Connectivity catalog, 794956-1, Active).

Higher-current member of the family. The 2825261-8 is an 8-position, dual-row, shrouded through-hole header, 4.20 mm pitch, 13 A per circuit at 600 V, UL94 V-0 (TE Connectivity catalog, 2825261-8, Active). The 2825260-2 is the 2-position member of the same form factor. The 4-1775099-7 sits in the same family at 20-position, 9 A per circuit at 600 V with a tin finish — a different position-count / current trade-off for buyers with denser lower-current needs.

High-current socket variants. The 2825213-1 is a power socket contact, 18-22 AWG, tin-plated with 100 µin (2.54 µm) finish thickness, crimp termination (TE Connectivity catalog, 2825213-1, Active). The 2825209-1 is the 16 AWG "SKT HCS" socket — the high-current-system member of the family for 16 AWG wire, where 13 A per circuit is achievable with the larger conductor.

The wire side of the system is the 794954-x receptacle housing, which accepts the 794958-x or 794956-x crimp sockets terminated on the wire harness. The tooling is a standard TE crimp press with a single die set per contact, not an IDC press — which is why the family is preferred for field-serviceable industrial builds where the IDC press and die inventory are not always available on the service bench.

Where the catalog gap actually lives on the 4.20 mm pitch

The TE Connectivity family and the Molex family on 4.20 mm pitch are functionally parallel but not drop-in interchangeable. A buyer who has been designed-in on Molex Mini-Fit and needs to move to TE VAL-U-LOK in August 2026 will face three concrete changes.

1. Housing footprint. The VAL-U-LOK receptacle housing has a different outer envelope than the Mini-Fit 5557 dual-row receptacle. The pitch is the same (4.20 mm), the row spacing is the same (4.20 mm), the locking ramp geometry is similar, but the housing width, board-lock post diameter, and latching ramp angle are not drop-in. A board respin is not required if the housing sits in free air; a board respin is required if the housing is dropped into a sheet-metal cutout or a plastic bezel.

2. Crimp contact. The 794955-x and 794958-x VAL-U-LOK crimp contacts are not the same form factor as the Molex Mini-Fit 5556 / 45750 crimp sockets. A buyer who switches families has to requalify the crimp press, the extraction tool, and the wire-strip length. The extraction tool in particular is a 5-second operation on the production line and a different extraction tool means a different training pass.

3. Glow Wire vs non-Glow Wire. The 2825274-x Glow Wire Compliant headers are not drop-in for the 2825272-x standard headers, and the agency listing files differ. A buyer who has historically used the 2825272-2 and now needs GW for an IEC 60335-1 appliance build must move to the 2825274-2 with the matching receptacle.

The buyer pain in 2026 is that these three differences are not material to a power-supply OEM that is designing a new board today, but they are material to a buyer who has been on a Mini-Fit BOM for five years and now needs to qualify a TE alternative because Mini-Fit is on allocation. The independent channel's job on this family is to walk that buyer through the cross-reference and to ship a sample reel against a board-level qualification.

A spec-anchored sourcing playbook for August 2026

A good RFQ to an independent channel on the VAL-U-LOK family starts with five fields and ends with three acceptance rules.

Five fields on the RFQ.

  1. Series and base number. State the TE base number from the datasheet (e.g., 794954 for the receptacle housing, 2825274 for the Glow Wire Compliant vertical header, 2825261 for the higher-current dual-row shrouded header, 794958 for the 22-26 AWG socket contact). Do not accept a cross-reference that does not include the TE base number.
  2. Position count. The receptacle housings on the family run from 2 to 12 positions in dual row; the headers from 2 to 12 positions in dual row; the higher-current 2825261-x runs from 2 to 8 positions.
  3. Plating code. The header is tin post / tin mating in the standard member and tin post / tin mating in the higher-current member; the crimp contacts are available in tin (standard) and gold (30 µin) for low-voltage signal-circuit applications. State the plating code on the contact, not just on the housing.
  4. Agency listing required. UL94 V-0 vs UL94 V-2 vs Glow Wire Compliant (IEC 60335-1). For appliance-control PSU and server PSU designs, V-0 is the default. For household appliance builds under IEC 60335-1, Glow Wire Compliant is required on the connector housing.
  5. Required quantity and ship window. State the ship window in calendar weeks; the independent channel's value is in matching the window, not in matching the franchised distributor's quote.

Three acceptance rules.

  1. Date-code visibility. The independent channel should show you the date code on the manufacturer's label (typically a YYWW format on the reel or tray) and a photograph of the lot before you commit. A reel of 794958-4 with a 2024 date code is functionally equivalent to a reel with a 2026 date code for an industrial-control use case, but the buyer has the right to know.
  2. Base-number match. The base number on the part (the digits before the dash, with the optional 2825 / 7949 / 4-1775 prefix that distinguishes the family member) must match your BOM line. If the RFQ response shows a different base number than your BOM, push back; do not accept cross-references on this family — the position count, shrouding, locking ramp, and Glow Wire compliance are all encoded in the base number.
  3. Crimp pull-out force on the first shipment. For a 794958-x or 2825213-x contact, the design intent is a 7 to 12 pound axial pull-out force on a properly terminated 18 AWG wire. If the first independent-channel shipment shows contacts that pull out at less than 5 pounds, the crimp geometry is fatigued and the lot should be returned.

MOQ and lead time in practice.

For Active base numbers (794954-6, 2825274-6, 2825261-8, 794958-4, 794955-4), the independent channel typically holds 250 to 2,500 pieces in tray, tube, or reel pack with a 1 to 4 week ship window. For Obsolete or Last-Time-Buy base numbers (where TE has formally announced the discontinuation), expect 50 to 500 pieces from the open market with a 2 to 6 week ship window and a per-piece premium that ranges from 1.5× to 3× the franchised Active price. For a glow-wire-compliant 2825274-x variant that the franchised channel is stocking on a 14 to 18 week cycle, the independent channel can often pull from a 2 to 6 week independent stock window.

What an independent channel can and cannot do on this family

An independent connector and interconnect distributor adds defensible value on three specific jobs on the VAL-U-LOK family.

First, the long-tail cross-reference job. If your BOM has a Molex Mini-Fit 39-28-x receptacle or a Molex Mini-Fit 5566 header and the franchised distributor cannot ship against your release, the independent channel can quote a TE VAL-U-LOK equivalent with the caveat that the housing footprint, crimp contact, and Glow Wire vs non-Glow Wire agency file must be requalified. The value is in shortening the cross-reference decision from a 6-week internal engineering review to a 5-day quote-and-sample cycle.

Second, the small-quantity bridge buy during a franchised allocation. If your production schedule consumes 800 pieces per month of a 6-position VAL-U-LOK header and the franchised channel is on an 18-week quote cycle, the independent channel can ship 500 to 1,000 pieces against a 1 to 4 week window at a per-piece premium that pays for itself in the avoided line-stoppage cost. The independent channel does not replace the franchised pipeline; it bridges the gap while the franchised quote is in flight.

Third, the Obsolete / Last-Time-Buy fill. If a specific VAL-U-LOK base number has been formally discontinued by TE, the independent channel will hold 50 to 500 pieces for 12 to 24 months after the Last-Time-Buy date. The premium on those parts is structural — 1.5× to 3× the franchised Active price — and the value is in keeping the production line moving when the franchised channel has stepped away.

What we cannot do, and what a buyer should not ask an independent channel to do, is move 50,000-piece volumes on an Active base number at a price that undercuts Mouser, Digi-Key, or TTI. The franchised channel's pricing on Active VAL-U-LOK in 13 A / 600 V form is genuinely better than ours by 8% to 15% per piece at volume, and that gap is structural — we do not have the franchised rebate, we do not have the bonded inventory, and we are not trying to compete on that business. We are trying to be useful on the part of the family the franchised channel has stepped away from.

A second honesty point: we do not carry a TE Connectivity UL Conditions of Acceptability certificate (CoC) on the VAL-U-LOK family, and we cannot pass through the franchised warranty. If your build is going into a UL 60950-1 / UL 62368-1 server PSU or a UL 508A industrial control panel, your UL follow-up service agency will ask for the manufacturer's CoC — and that CoC travels with the franchised distributor's invoice, not with an independent-channel invoice. We can point you to the Active TE datasheet and the base-product-number UL file reference; we cannot issue the CoC. For safety-critical and agency-listed builds, run the Active parts through the franchised channel and use the independent channel only on the long-tail Obsolete fills and the cross-reference jobs.

How this maps to the catalog and what to RFQ against

Our catalog at the time of writing carries 21 SKUs explicitly tagged to the VAL-U-LOK family across the TE Connectivity brand, with multiple position-count variants on the 794954-x receptacle, the 2825274-x Glow Wire Compliant header, the 2825272-x standard header, and the 794955-x / 794958-x / 2825213-x / 2825210-x / 2825211-x / 2825212-x crimp contacts. The catalog anchors worth pulling into an RFQ:

  • 794954-6 — VAL-U-LOK receptacle housing, 6 positions, 4.20 mm pitch, latch-lock, free-hanging, PA Nylon, -40°C to +105°C, contacts not included, Active
  • 2825274-6 — VAL-U-LOK Glow Wire Compliant vertical through-hole header, 6 positions, 4.20 mm pitch, board lock, 13 A per circuit, 600 V, UL94 V-0, Active
  • 2825274-2 — VAL-U-LOK Glow Wire Compliant vertical through-hole header, 2 positions, same electrical and material spec, Active
  • 2825272-2 — VAL-U-LOK standard vertical through-hole header, 2 positions, 4.20 mm pitch, 13 A per circuit, 600 V, UL94 V-2, Active
  • 2825261-8 — VAL-U-LOK higher-current dual-row shrouded header, 8 positions, 4.20 mm pitch, 13 A per circuit at 600 V, UL94 V-0, Active
  • 2825260-2 — VAL-U-LOK higher-current dual-row shrouded header, 2 positions, same electrical and material spec, Active
  • 794955-4 — VAL-U-LOK stamped pin contact, 18-22 AWG, gold 30 µin, crimp, Tape and Reel, Active
  • 794958-4 — VAL-U-LOK stamped socket contact, 22-26 AWG, gold 30 µin, crimp, Tape and Reel, Active
  • 794958-3 — VAL-U-LOK stamped socket contact, 22-26 AWG, tin, crimp, Tape and Reel, Active
  • 794956-1 — VAL-U-LOK stamped socket contact, 18-22 AWG, tin, crimp, Tape and Reel, Active
  • 2825213-1 — VAL-U-LOK power socket contact, 18-22 AWG, tin with 100 µin (2.54 µm) finish thickness, crimp, Active
  • 2825209-1 — VAL-U-LOK SKT HCS, 16 AWG, high-current-system member of the family, Active

The RFQ we want to see on the desk is: TE base number, position count, plating code on the contact (tin / gold / tin with 100 µin), Glow Wire Compliant or standard, agency listing required (UL94 V-0 vs V-2 vs IEC 60335-1 GW), required quantity, ship-by date, and the application note (server PSU / appliance control / HVAC I/O / industrial automation). With those fields, we can quote a ship window against our current long-tail stock and give you a date-coded photograph on the first offer. With less than those fields, we are guessing on lifecycle and you are guessing on price.

Closing on what the Q3 2026 picture actually says

The TE Connectivity Q3 FY2026 record quarter, the $1.4 billion Astrodyne TDI acquisition, the AI server power-device lead time stretching to 270 days, the ACES Electronics eightfold wire-harness capacity expansion with visibility to 2028, the Molex MiniMix launch into humanoid robotics, and the broader HVAC heat-pump electrification under DOE SEER2 mandates are six different signals, but they all converge on the same connector base: a 4.20 mm pitch, 13 A per circuit, 600 V wire-to-board power connector family on a discrete-wire harness with a Glow Wire Compliant or standard polyamide housing. The TE Connectivity VAL-U-LOK family is the in-house TE alternative for buyers who have historically been on Molex Mini-Fit and now need a cross-reference path through a Q3 2026 allocation cycle. It is not glamorous, not on the NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPU roadmap, and not on the front page of the trade press — but it is on the backplane of every 5,500 W server PSU that ships from a hyperscale contract manufacturer in the Pearl River Delta in Q4 2026, every reshored washing-machine control board, and every 21 SEER2 communicating heat-pump thermostat. The independent channel's job on this family is to keep the long-tail Active bridge buys moving on a 1 to 4 week ship window, to walk the cross-reference job from a Molex Mini-Fit BOM to a TE VAL-U-LOK BOM in a 5-day quote-and-sample cycle, and to hold the Obsolete fills in stock for 12 to 24 months after the Last-Time-Buy date so that the production lines do not stop waiting for an 18-week franchised reorder. If you have a TE base number, a position count, a Glow Wire Compliant flag, and a ship date, send the RFQ and we will quote against the long-tail stock we hold today.
