The solder cup termination and free-hanging in-line mounting make it a field-installable choice for coaxial cable assemblies using RG-8, RG-8A, RG-9, RG-9A, RG-9B, RG-87, RG-213, RG-214, RG-225, RG-302, or RG-393.
50 Ohm Impedance, 300 MHz — The UHF Band Limit
The 083-1SP carries a 50 Ohm nominal impedance, matching the standard for most RF test equipment, transceivers, and antenna systems. The 300 MHz maximum frequency defines its application envelope — this is a UHF connector, not a VHF or microwave part. Compare with the Amphenol 082-4425-1003, an N-type plug rated to 11 GHz, or the 031-2367-RFX, a TNC plug also rated to 11 GHz. The PL-259's frequency ceiling is a deliberate trade-off: the threaded coupling and robust centre pin deliver a reliable mechanical mate at a lower cost per connection, but the interface geometry limits its use to below 300 MHz. For a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi antenna feed or a 6 GHz instrumentation link, this is the wrong connector.

These are all nominally 50 Ohm coax with a similar dielectric diameter — typically around 0.285 inches for RG-8 and RG-213. No crimp tool is needed, which simplifies field installation but makes consistent shield termination dependent on the installer's technique. The silver-plated brass centre contact and body resist corrosion in outdoor or marine environments, but the silver finish will tarnish over time — it does not affect RF performance.
