20-Position ZIF for Dense FFC/FPC Routing
The F31S-1A7L1-11020 is a 20-position, 0.50mm pitch FFC/FPC connector from the Amphenol ICC Aorora F31S series. It uses a zero-insertion-force (ZIF) flip-lock actuator that secures the cable without stressing the contacts during insertion — the lock holds the FPC in place after the actuator is closed. The gold-plated phosphor bronze contacts (1.97 µinch gold) handle the signal integrity for low-voltage digital or analog paths inside a consumer or industrial assembly. The 0.50 mm pitch drives the board footprint — the tight centre-to-centre spacing demands careful trace routing on the PCB, typically on a 4-layer board to fan out the inner rows. The 5.80 mm height above board gives clearance under the connector for passives or vias on the opposite side.
ZIF Actuator and Board Retention
The flip-lock actuator is a backlock design — the cable inserts straight, then the actuator rotates down to clamp the contacts. This eliminates insertion force on the FPC pads, which is the main wear mechanism for thin flex circuits. The actuator material is LCP glass-filled, matching the housing for thermal expansion consistency during reflow. The vertical, single-sided contact design means the cable's conductive pads must face the contact side — orientation matters during assembly to avoid a non-contact condition.
Mating Cycle Life and Temperature Range
In a consumer device with a single assembly cycle, 30 cycles is ample margin; in a test fixture or field-service port, the limit is reached quickly. The LCP housing maintains dimensional stability across this range, keeping the contact beam force consistent.
The F31S-1A7L1-11020 is the 20-position member of the Aorora F31S family. The choice is purely the circuit count needed on the BOM.
