Waterproof USB-C for Harsh Environments
The Hirose CX90MW6-16P is a USB-C (USB Type-C) receptacle from the CX series, designed for applications that need a rugged, waterproof USB interface. It carries 24 contacts — the full USB-C complement — supporting both signal and power lines. The IPX8 rating in the product description means this connector is sealed against continuous immersion, making it a fit for outdoor equipment, marine electronics, or washdown enclosures where standard USB ports would fail. The current rating is split: 0.25A per contact on the signal pins, 1.25A per contact on the power pins. That 1.25A power path is sized for charging or low-power bus supply, not a main DC rail — the USB-C standard's power delivery role is handled by the CC line negotiation, not the connector's raw ampacity. The 48VAC/DC voltage rating covers the USB Power Delivery envelope comfortably. Gold contact finish on all 24 positions, combined with 10000 mating cycles, tells you this is built for repeated connect/disconnect duty — think field-serviceable equipment, docking stations, or test fixtures.
This is a surface-mount, right-angle receptacle with a horizontal mid-mount flange. The flange provides additional mechanical retention to the board — the solder joints alone don't have to absorb all the insertion and extraction forces from the cable plug.
The CX90MW6-16P is the waterproof, full-24-contact version of the CX90M-16P. The CX90M-16P also has 24 contacts but 16 are functional and 8 are dummy — so it supports only USB 2.0. Against the CX90MWD2G-24P, both are waterproof 24-contact USB-C receptacles. The CX90MWD2G-24P is explicitly listed as USB 3.2 Gen 2 and rated at 20VAC, while the CX90MW6-16P is rated at 48VAC/DC. The voltage difference may matter for Power Delivery applications — the CX90MW6-16P has the higher voltage headroom.
