The connector sits 0.169" (4.30 mm) above the board surface before mating. The outer shroud contacts align the two boards during assembly and protect the signal pins from shear stress — but the alignment is only as good as the solder joint retention. For the technician in the field, the gold contacts tolerate multiple board separations and re-mates without fretting corrosion, but the SMT joints are the mechanical weak point under vibration.
