USB Mini B for Automotive HMI — What This Connector Is
The Molex 1040870117 is a 5-contact USB mini B female header from the HSAutoLink 104087 series, designed for automotive human-machine interface (HMI) applications.
Board Layout and Mounting — Right-Angle Edge Fit
The through-hole solder tails provide mechanical retention beyond what a surface-mount USB connector would deliver in a high-vibration environment. The board-edge mounting feature and horizontal orientation are specified in the product drawing; the footprint requires a cutout in the PCB for the shielded shell to seat flush.
The phosphor bronze shell wraps the contact area and is soldered to the board ground plane, providing continuous shielding from the cable braid through to the PCB. For a USB 2.0 signal pair, this keeps the common-mode noise from coupling into the differential lines — the shield is not optional in an automotive or industrial EMI environment.
