Without it, the solder joints take the full extraction load and can crack over repeated cycles. The 4-wall shroud also protects the pins from being bent during handling – a common failure point on unshrouded headers in panel wiring. It is not a screw-lock, but for a 9-circuit power/signal interconnect it holds well enough for industrial equipment that rarely sees high-frequency vibration.
