The 1658622-2: It terminates the whole cable in one press — no stripping individual wires — and the forked contacts pierce the insulation on each conductor as the housing closes. The polarizing key and feed-through feature let you key the housing to prevent mis-mating and pass the ribbon cable through to another connector in a daisy-chain. The black housing is the standard colour for this position count in the series.
The 1658622-2 uses insulation displacement contacts (IDC) — the forked terminal slices through the ribbon cable jacket and grips the conductor without any stripping or soldering. It's rated for 26-28 AWG ribbon cable; the wire gauge determines whether the IDC slot gets a solid bite. 28 AWG is the sweet spot for standard ribbon; 26 AWG is thicker and the slot still closes, but the cable stiffness goes up. The termination tool (a hand press or arbor press with the correct die set) pushes the cover down and seats all 14 contacts at once. Because the contacts are forked rather than socket-style, the mating half is an AMP-Latch header with square or round pins on 0.100" centers. The polarizing key in the housing aligns with a slot in the header — no chance of plugging it in backwards or offset by one row.
