The cage is the mechanical and thermal interface for the module; the actual signal contacts live on a separate connector pressed into the back of the cage. Press-fit termination means the cage pins are pressed into plated through-holes on the board — no solder required. This keeps assembly lead-free by default and makes rework straightforward: desolder the separate signal connector if needed, then press the cage out from the back side.

The cage accepts standard SFP and SFP+ modules — the mechanical envelope follows the SFP Multi-Source Agreement (MSA), so any MSA-compliant transceiver fits. The right-angle mount places the cage body on the board edge, with the module insertion slot facing outward. The EMI shield contacts the chassis ground through the cage's spring fingers — ensure the board ground plane connects to the press-fit pin vias to complete the shield.
