SFP Cage with Integrated Light Pipe and EMI Shield
The TE Connectivity 2227317-1 is a right-angle SFP cage designed for through-hole mounting with press-fit termination. It integrates an EMI shield and a light pipe directly into the cage body, which means the board gets both electromagnetic containment and a visual link-status indicator without separate components. The press-fit tails eliminate the need for a wave-solder step on the backplane — the cage is pressed into plated through-holes, which is a common assembly method for high-reliability telecom and datacom line cards where solder-joint inspection on a dense connector is impractical.
Press-fit termination uses compliant pin tails that deform into the plated through-hole, forming a gas-tight joint without solder.
Integrated Light Pipe and EMI Shielding
The light pipe channels the SFP module's link/activity LED to the front bezel, saving the cost of a separate board-mounted LED and light-pipe assembly. The EMI shield is a stamped metal cage that contacts the panel cutout on all sides, providing a continuous ground plane around the SFP port. For the harness builder or system integrator, this means the cage itself handles the shielding — no separate gasket or conductive foam is needed at the panel interface, which speeds up assembly and reduces part count.
