Sealed USB-C for Harsh Environment Board Design
The TE Connectivity 2305018-2 is a 24-contact USB Type-C receptacle built for environments where a standard USB port would fail. Its IPX8 rating means the mated connector survives continuous immersion — the gasket seals at the panel face, not just the shell. Rated for USB 3.2 Gen 2, the 24 contacts handle the SuperSpeed+ differential pairs, sideband signals, and power delivery lanes. The steel and stainless shield provides EMI containment. The current rating is split across the contact groups — 0.25A, 1A, and 1.25A per the USB-C power delivery negotiation scheme. That is not a single continuous rating; the actual current each contact carries depends on the role (CC, Vbus, GND) assigned during USB PD negotiation. The 30V voltage rating covers standard USB PD voltages.
Mounting and Termination for a Sealed Assembly
The 2305018-2 uses a surface-mount right-angle footprint with additional through-hole anchor points for mechanical retention. The through-hole posts take the insertion and extraction forces off the SMD solder joints — critical when the connector lives in a panel that gets mated and unmated repeatedly. For field-service techs: the IPX8 rating is valid only when the connector is mated with a matching IPX8-rated plug — leave the receptacle unmated and the seal is open. Cap the open half during washdown cycles.
