The black housing uses a latch lock to hold the mated pair together, which matters when the harness runs through a panel or enclosure where vibration could work a friction-fit connector loose.
No soldering, no IDC — the harness builder needs the matching crimp terminal and the appropriate hand or automatic tooling from TE. The free-hanging mount means the connector sits in the wire run, not on a board, so the strain relief comes from the wire itself and the latch lock.
