7-Position IDC Receptacle for MTA-156 Harnesses
The TE Connectivity 3-640431-7 is a 7-position IDC receptacle in the MTA-156 series, built for mass-terminating 18 AWG discrete or ribbon cable into a single-row, free-hanging housing. The 0.156" (3.96mm) pitch matches the MTA-156 header footprint — the same pitch used across the series, so the IDC slot lines up with the conductor spacing on standard 0.156" ribbon cable. Watch pin-one every press: the closed-end feature stops the cable from pushing through the back of the housing, which keeps the termination depth consistent across all 7 positions. The orange colour makes this 7-position part easy to spot on a bench with other MTA-156 receptacles in different position counts.
Termination and Wire Prep
This is an IDC (Insulation Displacement Connector) termination — the 18 AWG wire is pressed into the slot, and the contact tines cut through the insulation to make the gas-tight joint. No stripping, no crimping. The 80.0µin (2.03µm) tin contact finish is thick enough for the IDC wipe and for moderate mating cycles in a controlled environment — think inside an enclosure, not under the hood. The free-hanging mount means this receptacle lives at the end of a cable, not on a board. It mates with the standard MTA-156 header (male pin header, 0.156" pitch, 7 positions).
