The 0.156" (3.96mm) pitch is the standard spacing for this family, giving enough room for the IDC slot to bite cleanly through the insulation without crowding adjacent wires. A closed end stops the cable from pushing through the housing, and the polarizing key ensures the mating header can only be inserted one way — both features that save rework on a harness build.
