IDC Termination and Wire Gauge
This receptacle uses insulation displacement contacts (IDC) rated for 24 AWG wire. The IDC slot pierces the insulation on insertion, making gas-tight connection without stripping or crimping. It accepts both discrete wire and ribbon cable, which suits automated harness production where consistent wire gauge is maintained. That is a heavy tin plate — more than enough for a few mating cycles in a permanent or semi-permanent installation. Tin is the economical choice when the connector is not cycled frequently; for applications requiring hundreds of matings, a gold-plated sibling would be the better fit.
The polarizing key ensures the receptacle can only be mated in the correct orientation — important in blind-mate or multi-connector harness assemblies where reversed mating could damage contacts or create shorts. As a female socket receptacle, it mates with the male pin headers in the MTA-156 family.
