IDC on Discrete Wire — What That Means on the Bench
Most IDC connectors are designed for ribbon cable with a specific conductor pitch. The DuoPlug 3-966480-3 takes discrete wires — each insulation is pierced individually as the cover is pressed down. That makes it useful for terminating a small bundle of individual 20-24 AWG wires (typical range for this class) into a single connector body without pre-crimping contacts. The trade-off: the wire must be stripped to a consistent length and laid into the slot before the IDC cover is closed, and rework means cutting and re-terminating.
Mating Half and Footprint Fit
This receptacle mates with the DuoPlug series pin header — look for the matching 3-position, 0.098" (2.50mm) pitch header from the same series. The single-row layout and free-hanging orientation mean the mated assembly runs wire-to-board: the header is soldered to the PCB, and this IDC receptacle terminates the harness end. The gray color is a visual key for the housing material, not a functional differentiator.
