What the Pinout and Shell Layout Tell You
The 9 positions in a DE-9 shell follow the standard RS-232 pinout — pin 1 through pin 9 in the familiar D-shaped arrangement. If you're replacing a connector on an existing RS-232 cable or a serial port card, the pin-for-pin match is straightforward: same shell, same position count, same thread.
The solder termination is field-serviceable with a basic iron — no crimp tool needed, just tin the wires and flow them into the cups. The 2-row layout keeps the pin spacing at the standard 0.108-inch (2.74 mm) row-to-row pitch, which matches the footprint for any DE-9 PCB layout. Grounding indents on the shell mate with the receptacle's dimples to create a low-impedance shield path before the signal pins engage.
