8p8c RJ45 Plug, Cat5, IDC Termination
The TE Connectivity 5-557315-2 is an 8-position 8-contact (8p8c) RJ45 modular plug, the standard interface for twisted-pair Ethernet. It is rated for Cat5 performance, supporting 100 MHz signaling used in 100BASE-TX and similar networks. The plug terminates 24-26 AWG solid wire via insulation-displacement contacts (IDC), a common method for field-terminated patch cables and structured cabling. The translucent clear polycarbonate housing allows visual inspection of the wire pair positions before crimping. The plug is unshielded, intended for UTP cable runs.
Obsolete — No Direct Successor Listed
The 5-557315-2 is officially marked Obsolete by TE Connectivity. No replacement order code is recorded in the lifecycle data. If a form-fit-function substitute is acceptable, a parametric search for an 8p8c Cat5 IDC plug with 50 µ" gold contacts will yield active alternatives from TE and other manufacturers.
The IDC termination accepts 24-26 AWG solid conductors only — stranded wire will not reliably pierce the insulation and should not be used. The plug body length is 0.895" (22.73 mm) from the cable entry to the latch face, a dimension to check against the crimp tool die and the boot or snagless cover if one is used. The translucent housing lets the installer verify that each conductor is fully seated past the IDC slot before the crimp is set.
