Cat3 Rating — What It Means for Cable Choice
This plug is rated Cat3, which limits its signal path to voice and data up to 16 MHz — standard for telephone lines, ISDN, and 10BASE-T Ethernet. It is not compatible with Cat5e or higher cable: the IDC slot geometry and contact spacing are tuned for the 26-28 AWG solid conductors of flat oval Cat3 cable. Using Cat5e cable in this plug will not seat the conductors properly, and the connector will not meet Cat5e crosstalk or bandwidth requirements.
