Product details

The TE Connectivity 5-557971-3 is a 6-position, 6-contact (6p6c) IDC plug designed for flat oval cable with stranded 26-28 AWG conductors. It is the plug half of a modular RJ-style interconnect — mates with a standard 6p6c jack (RJ11/RJ12/RJ14/RJ25 registered jack patterns). The translucent-blue polycarbonate housing allows a visual check of the IDC termination through the body. Rated Cat5, it supports 100 MHz signaling for 100BASE-TX Ethernet and similar data applications.

IDC termination — no stripping, no crimp tool. Solid wire will not terminate reliably in this plug.

Obsolete — Sourcing Reality

For a new design or a BOM line that needs a drop-in, the closest path is a parametric search for a 6p6c Cat5 IDC plug from TE or a compatible second source.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5-557971-3 compatible with Cat5e?

The plug is rated Cat5, not Cat5e. Cat5e requires tighter crosstalk and return-loss margins. While the plug may pass Cat5e in a short channel with good cable, it is not guaranteed to meet the Cat5e standard. For a Cat5e-rated assembly, use a plug explicitly rated Cat5e or higher.

Can I use 5-557971-3 with solid wire?

No. The plug is designed for flat oval cable with stranded 26-28 AWG wires. Solid conductors will not compress into the IDC slot properly and will produce an unreliable termination.
