The panel-mount flange carries the mechanical retention — the connector is screwed to the panel face, not held by the solder fillets. The right-angle SMT tails then only carry the signal and power, not the shear from a USB cable yanked sideways. This is the right part when the USB port needs to survive repeated customer plugging without cracking the solder joints on the board.
