The straddle-mount style clamps onto the edge of the PCB, which saves board real estate compared to a through-hole footprint and keeps the connector flush with the board edge for tight enclosure layouts. The unthreaded housing flange provides a mounting point for panel or bracket retention without requiring a threaded screw lock.
The straddle-mount termination means the connector sits astride the board edge, with solder tails on both sides of the PCB. This eliminates the need for plated through-holes in the board interior, freeing up routing channels on inner layers. The CHAMP.085 series uses a 0.085-inch (2.16 mm) contact spacing centerline. That pitch is wider than a standard 0.050-inch ribbon connector, so it handles slightly higher current per contact without crosstalk issues, but it still packs 50 signals into a connector body roughly 2.2 inches long.
