What This Backshell Covers
The TE Connectivity 5552560-1 is a one-piece plastic backshell for the CHAMP series, designed to fit a 50-position D-subminiature connector. The 90° cable exit routes the round cable parallel to the mating face, which keeps the assembly low-profile in enclosures where straight cable exit would hit the wall. The 4-40 screw locks are standard D-sub hardware — they mate with the jackscrews on the connector, so no adapter plate is needed. The cable clamp is included in the assembly, saving a separate line item on the BOM.
Build and Material Check
The housing is moulded from black Polyphenylene Oxide (PPO), a thermoplastic that holds up to the soldering and cleaning cycles typical of a harness assembly. The backshell is unshielded, so it is suited for signal applications where EMI is not the primary concern — if the cable is shielded, the shield drain wire needs a separate termination point. The 90° cable exit accepts round cable, and the integrated cable clamp grips the jacket to take strain off the solder cups or IDC contacts inside the connector.
