What This Backshell Does for a D-Sub Line
The TE AMPLIMITE 5745854-5 is a two-piece plastic backshell designed to terminate a shielded round cable onto a standard 9-position D-sub connector. It carries the 4-40 mating screws that lock the backshell to the connector body — without those screws the D-sub shell floats and the shield path opens up. The shell is shielded with a nickel over copper plating and the housing is a thermoplastic rated for the usual indoor equipment environment.
Fitting It to the Connector
This backshell fits any standard 9-position D-sub connector — the manufacturer lists compatibility with both 9pos and HD15pos shell sizes, and the shell size is E. The 4-40 threaded inserts are the standard UNC thread for D-sub hardware; they mate with the jackscrews on the mating connector or the D-sub itself. The two-piece clamshell design lets you dress the cable, tighten the strain relief, then screw the halves together before attaching to the connector body.
