What This Backshell Does for a D-Sub Assembly
The TE Connectivity 5747099-7 is a two-piece plastic backshell from the AMPLIMITE series, designed to fit D-sub connectors with 15 positions as well as high-density 26-position shells — both use Shell Size A. It provides a shielded enclosure around the solder bucket or IDC termination area, with nickel over copper plating on the shell halves for EMI containment.
Shell Compatibility and Fit
This backshell mates with any standard D-sub connector that uses Shell Size A — that covers both the 15-position standard density and the 26-position high-density layouts. The two-piece clamshell design traps the cable between the halves, and the 4-40 jackscrews pass through the backshell to secure it to the mating connector's threaded inserts.
Shielding and Plating
The nickel over copper plating on the shell halves provides a conductive path from the cable shield through the backshell to the D-sub connector's metal shell. When the 4-40 screws are tightened, the backshell halves compress against the connector shell, completing the shield continuity. This matters for applications where radiated emissions or susceptibility to external RF fields is a concern — the backshell turns a standard D-sub into a shielded cable assembly.
