Through-hole mounting gives it a soldered mechanical anchor that surface-mount versions lack — useful when the mating cycle count or board flex could stress a purely SMT joint. The gold contacts with 11.8µin (0.30µm) plating handle the mating cycles typical of production-level board assembly without the fretting risk of tin-on-tin.
Stack Height and Mating Half
The 8mm mated stack height is the working distance between the two parallel PCBs once the receptacle and its matching plug are fully seated. The receptacle itself sits 5.50mm above the board it's soldered into, so the mating plug contributes the remaining ~2.5mm to reach the 8mm total. The mating half is a Free Height (FH) plug with center strip contacts — same series, same pitch, same dual-row layout — that drops into the outer shroud of this receptacle. The only peer in the evidence, the 1-120532-2, is a different connector entirely — surface-mount, 0.039" pitch, 84 positions — not a functional substitute for a through-hole 40-position receptacle.
