The contact is formed from brass with a tin plating, which provides adequate corrosion resistance for general-purpose internal wiring but limits the mating cycle count compared to gold-plated alternatives.
Wire Sizing and Crimp Fit
The 770986-1 accepts wire from 22 AWG down to 26 AWG. The stamped construction gives consistent crimp barrel dimensions across the production run, so the crimp height and pull-off force stay within spec when you use the recommended TE application tooling. Tin-plated contacts are the standard choice for low-cycle, cost-sensitive harnesses — the tin surface cold-welds slightly on first mate, which is fine for permanent or infrequent disconnects.
This socket contact is designed to be loaded into a Mini-Universal MATE-N-LOK receptacle housing. The mating pin contact is the 770986-2 (stamped pin, same wire range). The contact retention in the housing relies on a lance that locks into the housing cavity — no secondary retainer is required for standard duty. The tin plating mates with either tin or gold pin contacts, though tin-on-tin is the typical pairing for this series.
