The housing is fully shrouded — four walls with a keying slot — so the pins are protected during handling and the mating half can only go in one orientation. The latch lock/eject hooks hold the mated pair together against vibration; the hooks also push the receptacle off when you squeeze them, which helps in tight panel spaces.
In a harness that gets disconnected a few times a year for maintenance, that plating will outlast the equipment. Contact material is phosphor bronze — a spring-grade alloy that holds its shape under repeated insertion and resists stress relaxation at elevated temperatures.
