The 0.100" pitch is the de facto 2.54 mm industry standard — it drops straight into a standard perfboard or a 0.100"-center footprint without a layout change. 5 A per contact is a signal-level rating; the limiting factor is the pin cross-section and the temperature rise in the unshrouded housing, not the contact itself.
