The 5 A per-contact rating is typical for a signal-level header at this pitch — the limiting factor is the 0.100" pin spacing and the tin interface, not the contact cross-section. For power distribution above a couple of amps per circuit, you'd want a thicker pin or a shrouded header with a higher current rating. The through-hole termination gives a solid mechanical anchor on the board, and the 0.120" (3.05mm) post length fits standard 0.062" to 0.093" PCBs without bottoming out.
