BergStik II Unshrouded Header, 14-Position, Right-Angle
The FCI 86840-414HLF is a 14-position, dual-row unshrouded header from the BERGSTIK® II series. It uses the standard 0.100" (2.54 mm) pitch on both rows and between rows, making it a drop-in fit for legacy 0.100" grid layouts. The through-hole, right-angle mounting places the pin row parallel to the board surface, which suits edge-connector applications where the mating cable or board approaches from the side. Rated 5 A per contact with tin-on-tin mating surfaces, this header is built for signal-level interconnects and moderate power duty where the total current per circuit stays under the 5 A ceiling.
What the Ratings Mean for Your Fit
The 14 positions are all loaded — no skipped pins to trip up a BOM check. The 0.100" pitch is the de facto standard for BergStik-compatible footprints, so the board layout matches any 14-pin, dual-row, 0.100" header pattern. The 5 A per-contact rating is the thermal limit at room temperature; derate it if the ambient inside the enclosure runs hot. Tin plating on both the mating and post sides keeps cost low, but tin-to-tin contacts are rated for fewer mating cycles than gold — figure on 50 to 100 cycles before the contact resistance starts to climb. If the application needs frequent disconnect, a gold-plated sibling in the same series is the better call.
Mounting and Termination
This header terminates through solder holes in a right-angle orientation. The solder posts measure 0.230" (5.84 mm) long, which gives enough protrusion through a standard 0.062" board for a reliable fillet. The unshrouded design means there is no plastic wall around the pins — the mating receptacle or ribbon cable housing aligns directly to the pin tips. The 0.318" (8.08 mm) mating pin length provides good wipe before the contacts bottom out. The housing is rated UL94 V-0, so it meets the flame-retardant requirement for equipment inside an enclosure.
