Surface-mount termination means the header sits on the PCB without through-holes — the solder tails reflow onto surface pads, so there's no back-side clearance needed behind the board. This is a clean fit for double-sided assemblies where the opposite side carries components or a ground plane.
What the Gold Plating and 3 A Rating Mean in Practice
The 3 A per-contact rating is conservative for the phosphor bronze spring material; at 3 A the temperature rise stays well within the UL94 V-0 housing's thermal limits. Compare with the sibling 95157-440LF: same pitch, same current, same dual-row SMT footprint, but with a tin mating finish (100.0 µin) instead of gold.
