End-Launch SMA Jack for 20 GHz Signal Paths
The Samtec SMA-J-P-H-ST-EM1 is a 50 Ohm SMA jack, female socket, designed for board edge, end launch mounting. It handles signals up to 20 GHz, making it a fit for RF test fixtures, microwave modules, and high-frequency interconnect where the launch into the PCB trace must be clean. The threaded fastening ensures a vibration-resistant mate with standard SMA plug cable assemblies.
What the 20 GHz Ceiling Means for the Layout
The 20 GHz max frequency is the connector's usable bandwidth — beyond that, the return loss degrades and the signal launch becomes a mismatch. For a 50 Ohm system, the end launch footprint must be designed with a ground-plane cutout and trace width that matches the centre pin geometry; otherwise the 20 GHz rating is theoretical. The 335 V voltage rating covers most RF power levels, but the limiting factor at high frequency is the dielectric breakdown in the PTFE, not the air gap.
