What the Gold Plating Buys You
The 15.0µin gold finish on the 281784-5 is the primary differentiator from the tin-plated 281786-5 (same 5 positions, same pitch, but 26-28 AWG and tin contacts). Gold resists oxidation and fretting corrosion better than tin, so the 281784-5 holds lower contact resistance over more mating cycles. If your application lives in a clean, low-cycle environment (one-time install, indoor equipment), the tin-plated 281783-4 (4 positions) or 281786-5 could save cost. If the connector will be mated and unmated during field service or test, the gold is the right call.
Mating and Wire Fit
Wire range is 24-26 AWG discrete; 26 AWG is explicitly supported per the spec. The IDC termination requires a hand or pneumatic press tool to push the wire into the slot; no wire stripping needed.
