The 0.156" (3.96mm) pitch is wider than the 0.100" signal standard — this spacing is sized for the insulation and conductor mass of 18 AWG power wiring, not for high-density signal routing. The closed-end housing prevents the wire from being pushed past the IDC slot during assembly — a practical safeguard against intermittent opens that can occur when an assembler over-inserts the conductor into an open-back housing. The orange colour is a visual key for the wire gauge or circuit function on the assembly line, though the functional spec is the same regardless of colour.
IDC Termination for 18 AWG Discrete Wire — Permanent, No Crimp Tool Needed
This receptacle uses insulation displacement contacts (IDC) for 18 AWG discrete wire. The trade-off is that the termination is permanent: once the wire is seated, it cannot be removed without cutting it off. The 18 AWG wire gauge is at the heavier end of the IDC range — the slot geometry is designed for the insulation diameter and conductor stiffness of 18 AWG, not for finer wire. Using a smaller gauge risks a loose fit in the slot; using a larger gauge may not fit at all.
