Breakaway vs Fixed-Length Headers

Breakaway headers save inventory cost and variety: instead of stocking 36-position, 40-position, and 50-position headers as separate part numbers, a single breakaway strip stock covers all pin counts. The trade-off: the breakaway point leaves a rough edge on the insulator, and the outermost pins at the break point may have slightly different positional tolerance than machine-positioned pins. For precision applications or automated assembly, fixed-position headers guarantee dimensional consistency at the cost of higher inventory variety.

Breakaway Procedure

Use smooth-jaw pliers to snap the header at the desired position. Do not twist — apply even pressure perpendicular to the pin axis. Remove any plastic burrs from the break point with a deburring tool before insertion into the PCB. Verify that the pins at the break point are straight and parallel.
