The JST 09DB-4K is a 9-position IDC connector from the DB series, designed for mass-terminating 24-28 AWG stranded wire to a 0.098" (2.50mm) pitch ribbon cable. The press-fit through-hole mounting lets you stake it into a PCB without solder — handy when you need to rework a board or swap a damaged connector on site without desoldering a whole row of pins. The closed-end design prevents the cable from pushing through the housing, so the IDC contacts register consistently every time you squeeze the tool.
What the IDC Termination Means in Practice
IDC termination punches through the insulation to make contact with the conductor — no stripping, no crimping individual terminals. That saves time on a harness build, but it also means the wire gauge has to land inside the 24-28 AWG stranded range the connector is specced for. Try 22 AWG and the slot won't bite deep enough; 30 AWG and the conductor might not fill the slot, leaving an intermittent connection that shows up as a flaky signal on the line. The 9 positions are all loaded, so every slot is active — no dummy positions to work around.
Press-Fit Mounting and Board Fit
The press-fit tails are designed to be pushed into plated through holes on the PCB — the interference fit holds the connector in place mechanically and makes the electrical connection without solder. That's useful if the board goes through a wave solder process for other components and you don't want the connector to see the heat, or if you're building a prototype where you might swap the connector later. Tin-Lead Contact Finish — What It Tells You
The tin-lead contact finish is a heads-up for anyone checking RoHS compliance. Tin-lead is not RoHS-compliant under the current exemptions for most applications, so if your BOM calls for lead-free, this isn't the version you want. The DB series does have RoHS-compliant variants with different plating — the 09DB-4K specifically carries tin-lead, so check the plating code on your mating half to avoid galvanic corrosion between dissimilar finishes.
