What This 16-Position IDC Plug Does
It mates with the standard AMP-Latch receptacle (female socket) to form a board-to-peripheral or board-to-board interconnect inside enclosures — think disk drive cables, internal data links, or control panel wiring where a flat ribbon cable needs a reliable, repeatable connection.
The latch lock/eject hooks provide positive retention against vibration while allowing tool-less unmating; the eject feature is especially useful in tight panel-mount installations where you need to break the connection without prying at the housing. Panel mounting means the plug is fixed to a chassis or bulkhead, not free-hanging, so the cable exit is controlled and the strain relief handles the pull force from the ribbon cable.
Termination and Tooling Reality
IDC termination requires a dedicated press tool — a hand-operated or pneumatic press that drives the ribbon cable into the insulation-displacement slots in one stroke. There is no soldering or wire stripping; the tooling cost is a one-time investment. The 26-28 AWG range covers standard 0.050" pitch ribbon cable; using cable outside that gauge risks incomplete displacement or damaged contacts. The feed-through feature lets the ribbon cable pass straight through the connector body, which simplifies daisy-chaining in some harness layouts.
