Pitch, Shroud, and Lock — What Matters on the Board
The 1-292161-1: At this pitch, a 11-position single-row header takes up about 22 mm of board edge, leaving room for traces between the through-holes on a standard 2-layer board. The three-wall shroud means the back and two sides of the pins are enclosed — the open side faces the board edge. This is a common configuration for board-to-cable headers where the cable enters from the side, not the end. The kinked pin solder tail (0.126" post length) gives a mechanical lock in the plated through-hole before the solder fillet forms.
It is RoHS compliant and available in bulk packaging. This is a standard catalog part — no end-of-life notice or successor has been issued.
The difference is mounting orientation: the 1-292161-1 is vertical through-hole, while the 1-292164-1 is right-angle through-hole. The right-angle version also has a 4-wall shroud instead of 3-wall. For a cable that drops straight onto the board, the vertical header is the correct fit.
