The housing is sealed, which means it is intended for environments where moisture, splash, or washdown is a concern — think engine compartments, industrial controls, or outdoor equipment. The gray PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) glass-filled body provides dimensional stability and a UL94 V-0 flame rating typical of this class.
Sealed housing — what that means in practice
It is not just a splash shield — the seal is built into the housing interface, so the connector pair can be used in applications that see occasional washdown or condensation. If your harness runs in a dry, climate-controlled cabinet, an unsealed housing would work too, but for anything exposed to the elements, this is the right call. The seal also helps prevent corrosion on the crimp terminals over time.
Contacts not included — the common gotcha
This is not a defect — it is how TE sells these housings. The wire gauge, plating (tin or gold), and current rating are determined by the terminal you choose, not the housing. A common mistake is ordering only the housing and then holding up production waiting for the contacts.
