Latch holder retention and board guide
Fastening is via a latch holder, providing positive mechanical retention against cable pull and vibration — a practical advantage in industrial panels or equipment where the cable is routed and tied down.
A common cross-shop is the TE CT series header 1-292164-1, which uses a 2.00mm pitch (vs 2.50mm) and carries 11 positions (vs 9). The CT part is right-angle, while the 917729-1 is vertical through-hole. Both are shrouded and use tin contacts, but the pitch difference means they are not footprint-compatible — the board layout must match the chosen pitch.
