How do you convert mm² to AWG?
The converter reduces every input to conductor diameter: for mm² it uses d = 2 × √(A/π), then AWG = 36 − 39 × log₉₂(d / 0.127). As an example, 2.5 mm² — the IEC 60228 standard size for 15 A household runs — is closest to 13 AWG (≈1.78 mm diameter).
What is the difference between AWG and SWG?
AWG and SWG (British Standard Wire Gauge) are different diameter scales that assign different diameters to the same gauge number. For example, 10 SWG is about 3.25 mm, while 10 AWG is about 2.59 mm. Always confirm which standard a datasheet uses — the converter interpolates SWG from a standard size table.
How do I convert kcmil to mm²?
kcmil is converted to mm² via the fixed constant 1 kcmil = 0.5067 mm² (1 cmil = 0.0005067 mm²). For example, 250 kcmil — a common large power conductor — is about 126.7 mm².
How it works
Conductor diameter follows the standard AWG relationship d(mm) = 0.127 × 92^((36 − AWG) / 39) for copper, with area from A = π × (d ÷ 2)². SWG uses the imperial Standard Wire Gauge table, which differs from AWG at the same gauge number. kcmil (circular mils × 1000) is converted from mm² via the fixed constant 1 cmil = 0.0005067 mm².
