Through-hole, right-angle mounting with a horizontal orientation places the USB port parallel to the board surface — typical for edge-mounted connectors on a PC motherboard or a hub card. The board lock is a pair of solder tabs that extend through the PCB and get soldered in the same wave process as the signal pins. They take the mechanical strain off the 4 signal pins during cable insertion, which is the common failure mode on unshielded right-angle USB jacks.
